Chewing Gum has this many Calories (Lowest to Highest)!

Chewing gum, even the sugar-free type, has calories. A couple of pieces of gum are not going to affect anyone’s daily calories target, but it is still good to know which chewing gum has relatively more calories. Remember, you don’t have to swallow chewing gum to absorb its calories (don’t swallow gum!). The calories listed on the pack relate to what you do swallow, not the indigestible chewy stuff.

Does Chewing Gum contain Calories?

Yes! Chewing gum contains calories because even the sugar-free types have calorie-containing ingredients which are swallowed in the course of chewing the gum. Sure, if you only eat a couple of pieces per day (about 5-6 grams), you’ll only be absorbing about 15 calories for the high calorie gums. However, if you chew through a whole 56g pack you’ll need to add about 150 calories to your Calorie Tracker!

Typical Chewing Gum Ingredients

A typical sugar-free chewing gum has the following ingredients:

Sorbitol, Gum base, Humectant (422), Mannitol, Flavour, Xylitol, Food Acids (330, 296, 297), Sweeteners (951, 950), Emulsifier (Soy Lecithin), Colour (110), Antioxidant (321).

The sugar-containing chewing gums have this sort of ingredient list:

Sugar, Gum Base, Corn Syrup, Humectant (422), Corn Starch, Flavour, Emulsifier (322, From Soy), Food Acids (296, 330), Sweeteners (950, 951), Colours (129, 133), Antioxidant (321).

Pretty much everything except the “Gum Base” in each formulation can be swallowed and absorbed, so that’s where the calories are coming from. If you want to find out what some of those coded food additives are, check out our post on emulsifiers!
